Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) replaced this South Carolina resort's Municipal Airport. The 143 acre property where the original airport was located, was initially quit claim deeded to the city by Uncle Sam in 1948 following World War II. It carried a deed restriction preventing it to be used for anything but an airport. Those restrictions were later lifted when the U.S. Air Force expanded the Municipal air strip into the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in 1954.
The City continued to operate its Municipal Airport operations from theAir Force Base until 1958 when they moved their facility two miles to the Northto the Crescent Beach Airport. That airport was renamed the Myrtle BeachAirport at Crescent Beach.
A series of lawsuits arose over control of the airport assets between the City of Myrtle Beach and the surrounding Horry County. In 1993 when the Air Forceclosed its facility, Horry County purchased the Myrtle Beach Jetport. That Jetport property was later expanded and renamed Myrtle Beach International Airport in1995. Since that time, Horry County and Myrtle Beach have resolved differences.
